In the event of a storm...

Hurricane Emily has yet to show her face around these parts, but all the volunteers in the southern region of the DR have been consolidated for the last two days to wait out the storm.  I am with seven other volunteers in a hotel in San Juan, a big town about an hour away from Tabara.  We’ll be here at least until tomorrow morning, with possibilities of 20-25 inches of rain.

Peace Corps consolidates us not because San Juan is less likely to get hit with the storm than our communities are, but so that we aren’t stuck on mountains or in valleys, wherever it is that we live, in the case that they really need to get us out of the area.   While my town is pretty close to the main highway, and has a bridge over the river that runs through it, many other volunteers live in more remote campos where they would definitely be trapped in the event of a lot of rain.

It’s a pleasant change of pace to see a bunch of other volunteers and hang out for a few days in a comfortable hotel (air conditioning, wi-fi, hot showers!), but I think we’ll all definitely be ready to get back to our communities tomorrow.  Hopefully this is just a little passing rain!
